Major Upgrades for Polkadot Proposed

Polkadot has one of the most active developer communities in the Web3 space, but what are they working on? In his recently published Polkadot Roadmap Roundup, Founder Robert Habermeier offers an early glimpse into the major upgrades planned for Polkadot. You can read the full Polkadot Roadmap Roundup or check out this snippet of what's to come, provided each proposal is approved by governance.

ASYNCHRONOUS BACKING

Asynchronous backing has the potential to give Polkadot the lead in scalability, bumping throughput to between 100k and 1 million transactions per second with no impact on security. It will cut the block time for parachains from 12 seconds to 6 and increase block space 5-10x. Besides enhancing the amount of work each parachain can handle, this major scalability improvement would also optimize network performance, allowing for more parachains to be registered.

PARATHREADS

Parathreads are parachains that connect to Polkadot on a pay-as-you-go basis, without needing to win a parachain auction. Parathreads are the ideal way to join the Polkadot ecosystem and start iterating quickly because they combine the power of a blockchain with the convenience of launching a smart contract.

INTEROPERABILITY

Hitting an all-time high of cross-chain messages sent in August, Parachains are pushing the boundaries of interoperability. The next update for XCM (cross-consensus messaging) will add some neat features, including improved fee payments, NFT transfers, APIs for interacting with pallets on other chains, and interoperability with external networks like Ethereum through secure trustless bridges. The release of XCMv3 is expected to happen by the end of 2022.

NOMINATION POOLS, NATIVE STAKING

Nomination pools are an upcoming feature that will allow people even with small amounts of DOT to stake without the need for third-party services. Learn more about nomination pools and how to prepare for them in the latest Staking System Update, and check out the new Staking Dashboard for the easiest way to stake natively.
